# Buying a Used Tesla Model 3 in Sydney: How to Check Battery Health and What a Replacement Actually Costs

Drive along Parramatta Road on any given weekend and you'll spot them everywhere — white, black, midnight blue Model 3s sitting on forecourts with windscreen cards reading "low kilometres" and "one owner." Prices run from the low twenties to the mid-forties. On paper, a lot of them look like a bargain.

With a used petrol car, most buyers know the two big fears: odometer fraud and hidden accident damage. With a used Tesla, there's a third concern that sits quietly in the back of everyone's mind — one that most people can't actually answer until it's too late: **how much battery is really left?**

This isn't paranoia. Tesla's official warranty promises the battery won't drop below 70% of its original capacity within a certain mileage and time window, but meaningful degradation can happen long before you hit that floor. Every percentage point lost is range you're not getting — and in Sydney's electricity market, the extra charging adds up. More to the point: when you eventually need a new battery pack, the quote will likely be the kind of number that makes you wish you'd done this homework first. One buyer we spoke with figured a replacement would run "maybe two or three thousand dollars." The actual quote was six times that.

This article has one job: show you how to read the battery's real condition from the car's own screen, and give you a clear picture of what replacement costs look like in NSW — so you can walk into a buying decision with your eyes open.

## Why Sydney Specifically Makes Battery Health Matter More

First, the basics: the Model 3 runs on a lithium-ion battery pack, and like all lithium batteries, it degrades with charge cycles, time, and operating conditions. Fast charging is harder on the battery than overnight AC charging at home, and a car that's spent its whole life on Superchargers will show more wear at a given mileage than one that mostly charged slowly overnight.

**Uber kilometres.** A significant number of Sydney Model 3s have done rideshare work. The higher mileage is obvious; what's less obvious is the charge pattern — full charge, full discharge, repeat, via Supercharger. That combination ages a battery faster than ordinary commuting does. These cars can look immaculate. You cannot tell from the exterior.

Here's what sets Tesla apart from every other car on the market: **the car's own screen will show you the battery's actual condition.** No OBD reader, no third-party app, no specialist equipment. You just need to know where to look.

One misconception to clear up before we get there: the estimated range on the main screen is *not* a measure of battery health. That figure shifts constantly based on your recent driving patterns — whether the air conditioning has been running, whether you've been on the Eastern Distributor or Parramatta Road, how you've been driving for the past week. Using it to judge battery condition will send you in the wrong direction. What you actually want are the two data points below.

## Two Screens to Check Before You Walk Away

**Reading One: Rated Range**

*Navigation path: Controls → Service → Battery*

This screen shows the car's current Rated Range at full charge — a capacity figure tied to the battery itself, not your driving style. Divide it by the original factory figure for the same model and trim, and you have the battery's remaining health as a percentage.

Here are the reference figures for the most common variants:

- **Model 3 Standard Range RWD (2019–2021):** factory rated approximately 448–491 km
- **Model 3 Long Range AWD (2019–2022):** factory rated approximately 568–602 km
- **Model 3 Performance AWD (2019–2022):** factory rated approximately 547–576 km

A worked example: you're looking at a 2020 Long Range. The screen shows 528 km at full charge. Against a factory reference of 576 km, that's about 91.7% retention — excellent condition for a used car. The same model showing 490 km sits around 85%, which is worth asking about. At 455 km, you're around 79%, and that's when replacement costs need to enter the conversation seriously.

A simple framework:

Tap the Energy app at the bottom of the screen, scroll back through the charge history, and look at the shape of recent sessions. A healthy battery charges smoothly — the curve from around 20% to 80% is clean and progressive, then tapers off naturally above 90% as the battery management system applies charge protection. That taper is normal.

What you don't want to see: a step in the curve — say, the charge stalling at 65% for an unusual pause before resuming — or the stretch from 85% to 100% taking far longer than it should. These patterns can point to inconsistent cell health across the pack. Not every anomaly means immediate disaster, but anything that looks off gives you legitimate grounds to request a proper diagnostic from a Tesla service centre before you commit.

Also on the Battery screen: a breakdown of DC fast charging versus AC charging over the car's history. If DC fast charging accounts for more than 40–50% of total sessions, this car has likely spent most of its life on Superchargers — or doing rideshare. Either way, treat the battery health reading with extra scrutiny.

## PPSR and Service History: Two Steps You Can't Skip

Battery health is the headline concern with a used Tesla, but it's not the only one.

**Run the PPSR regardless**

There's a misconception floating around that EVs are somehow lower-risk for PPSR checks — "no engine means less can go wrong." That logic has a hole in it. A used Tesla can carry outstanding finance, an insurance write-off listing, or a flood-damage history just like any other car. During Sydney's 2022 western suburbs floods, a number of damaged vehicles eventually found their way back onto the market. Water damage on an electric car is considerably more complex and expensive to deal with than on a petrol vehicle — and it's essentially invisible from the outside.

In NSW, if you unknowingly purchase a car with outstanding finance against it, the lender has the right to recover the vehicle — and the financial loss falls on the buyer. NSW Fair Trading sees complaints like this every year. Two dollars is not the place to economise.

**Ask to see the Tesla App service history**

Tesla keeps a more complete digital trail than most car brands. Software updates, service orders, and remote diagnostic events are all logged in the owner's Tesla App, and a seller with nothing to hide should have no problem pulling it up on the spot — or sending you screenshots if you ask in advance.

Three things to look for:

- **OTA update history.** A normally used car should show a consistent stream of over-the-air software updates. A gap of a year or more is worth questioning.
- **Battery-related work orders.** Any entry mentioning "Battery Module Replacement" or "High Voltage Battery Service" needs a proper explanation: why was it done, is it still within warranty coverage, and was the work carried out by an authorised service centre?
- **Collision repair records.** Tesla service centres log body repair work; third-party repairers don't always show up here, which is why the PPSR and a hands-on body inspection are your backup.

If the seller says they can't access the app — after you've given them advance notice that you'd like to see it — that's a transparency signal worth noting.

## What Battery Replacement Actually Costs in Sydney

This is the part people usually look up *after* they've bought the car. Let's deal with it now.

Tesla battery pack replacements in Australia go through Tesla's authorised service centres only. In Sydney, that means Artarmon or Rushcutters Bay. Tesla does not authorise third parties to swap out the high-voltage battery pack, and cars that have had non-authorised battery work done can lose access to certain over-the-air features and may be affected in other ways.

**If the car is still under warranty**

The catch — and this is one most people miss — is that warranty transfer after a private sale in Australia is not automatically guaranteed in every case. Before you buy, contact Tesla directly with the VIN and get written confirmation of the remaining warranty period and whether it transfers to a new private owner. Don't take the seller's word for it; sellers sometimes have an incomplete picture of this themselves.

**Is there anything short of a full replacement?**

If the issue is cell-level degradation rather than a full pack failure, Tesla service centres can sometimes carry out module-level repairs at a lower cost than a full swap. But this isn't universally available — it depends entirely on what the diagnostic reveals about the pack's internal state. An ordinary buyer standing in a car park can't make that call. That's one reason we'd suggest treating a Tesla service centre pre-purchase inspection as a genuine option when battery health sits in the grey zone between 82% and 86%, rather than something you "might do later." A diagnostic fee now is considerably cheaper than a surprise repair bill after settlement.

## How Price and Battery Condition Line Up in the Sydney Market

Current NSW market reference ranges — these move with supply and demand, so treat them as orientation, not gospel.

**$22,000–$28,000** typically gets you a 2018–2020 Standard Range car with somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 km on the clock. Quality varies a lot at this price point: there are well-maintained family cars in this bracket, and there are ex-Uber vehicles that have been through hard charge cycles. The attractive price is not a reason to skip the battery check — it's a reason to be more careful about it.

**$30,000–$38,000** generally covers 2020–2022 Long Range or Performance variants with lower mileage and better overall battery condition. But the spread within this bracket can be five or six thousand dollars for what appears to be the same car. That gap almost always comes down to battery health, the completeness of service records, and how transparently the seller presents the car's history. PPSR and service history matter more here, not less.

**Above $40,000** you're approaching 2022–2023 cars that are likely to carry some remaining factory warranty, low charge cycles, and more predictable ongoing costs. At this level it's also worth running the numbers on a brand-new Model 3 Highland — the gap between new and near-new isn't always as wide as you'd expect, and with a new car you get certainty on the battery front that simply doesn't exist in the used market.

One more note on Uber cars, because they come up often: beyond the DC fast-charge percentage on the Battery screen, the interior tells a story that's harder to stage. The driver's seat bolster, the door panel on the driver's side, and the area around the pedals wear differently on a car that's spent all day picking up passengers compared to one that's done school runs. Rear seat cushions with pronounced compression or repeated cleaning marks are another indicator. Odometer fraud exists; interior wear patterns are a lot harder to fake.

## One Honest Thing Worth Saying

There's a lot to like about a used Model 3 in Sydney. Near-zero fuel costs, software that stays current through OTA updates, and — genuinely — a better experience in Parramatta Road traffic than most comparably priced petrol cars. None of that is marketing. It's just true.

But the battery is a risk concentration point that petrol cars don't have. The ongoing cost exposure could easily exceed whatever you thought you were saving on the purchase.

That's not an argument against buying. It's an argument for making sure **the price reflects the risk.** A Long Range at 82% health asking $36,000 versus the same model at 91% asking $39,000: that $3,000 difference looks a lot smaller once you've read the replacement cost table above. Three thousand dollars against the possibility of a $16,000–$22,000 bill down the road is a very different calculation than three thousand dollars for measurably better battery condition and a more predictable ownership experience.
